Good or Bad!

Deciding to be good or bad is a matter of personal choice. Good = purity of thought, word and deed. Bad = filled with lewdness, uncleanness and lustful thinking, unable to grasp a Jesus spirit or more likely to be unwilling to.

Romans 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. (NKJV)

We, as Christians, can be looked upon as being weird or unacceptable: we have no control over that – it is another person’s thinking. The sad fact is that many choose to live in their badness and even extend it to others. Personally, I choose to disregard unhealthy thinkers and instead cling to what is good! (Romans 12:9b) There is already, too much vulgarity in this earthly world and sadly, many think it is OK to be that way.

As we fill ourselves with God’s Word – we leave no room for filth or evil – God will deal ...

Follow God's example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. NIV Listen ...

Forced Choice: Favorite European Cities

It’s been a while since we’ve had a new forced choice around here. Our last one focused on whether Adam and Eve were historic individuals. That one stirred some interesting discussion and quite a few votes. But the end result is that almost two-thirds of us (64.5%) saw Adam and Eve as real, historic individuals. That vote was split between whether they were created less than 10,000 years ago (38.5%) or more (26%). Less than a third said that they were not historic individuals (27.5%). And only 8% were interested in the option that they were historic individuals, but that they were not literal ancestors of all humans.

Daily Manna from the Net for Saturday, July 28, 2012 [Matthew 9:27-34]

As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, calling out, 'Have mercy on us, Son of David!' When he had gone indoors, the blind men came to him, and he asked them, 'Do you believe that I am able to do this?' 'Yes, Lord,' they replied. Then he touched their eyes and said, 'According to your faith let it be done to you'; and their sight was restored. Jesus warned them sternly, 'See that no one knows about this.' But they went out and spread the news about him all over that region. While they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed and could not talk was brought to Jesus. And when the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute spoke. The crowd was amazed and said, 'Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.' But the Pharisees said, 'It is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons.' NIV

Loving and Beloved!

1 John 4:20-21 If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also. (NKJV)

To say “I love you” is easy. To truly deeply love is more difficult, because you have to expect nothing in return and yet be willing to give your all! God loves us unconditionally, despite our past bad actions or behaviors: He forgives us everything we might have done because He loves us so much. Once we accept that concept, we are free to grow into the people He made us to be, and we can do it because we are finally free of the guilt our past kept dredging up.

When others see how we have changed and perhaps comment on the difference, we can share this little phrase: “We are ...

Humans Aren’t Hamsters, But the “Image” Is More Than That

On the fifth day, God created the fish and the birds. Early on the sixth day, he created all the land animals. But it was only when he got to the end of the sixth day that he made creatures who would be in his image and likeness: humans. No other creature gets that distinction. Just us. We must be pretty cool. Special.

We’re exploring what it means to be made in the image of God. (See the whole series here.) And, like many difficult questions, your starting point makes all the difference. If you start with the fact that only humans are said to be in the image of God, then it seems like you have a relatively simple procedure for figuring out what the image is: just find whatever it is that makes us distinct from all the other creatures, and you should be all set.

5 Highlights from a Slovokian Summer Camp

Summer camps exhaust me. I love teens, and I love spending quality time with them. But by the last day of a full week at summer camp I just want to take my sore muscles, raspy voice, and weary eyes home from some much needed rest.

This last week has been different. By the end, I was still sore, raspy, and tired. But I could easily have stayed longer.

And I can’t quite figure out why. The language barrier made it difficult to capitalize on those spontaneous conversations that usually provide the best opportunities for meaningful interaction. So I’ve been at camps where I felt like I’ve had more of an impact. The camp facilities were smaller than I’m used to, which means there was also less to do. So I’ve been at camps that were more fun. And trust me, it wasn’t not the food! So why did I feel like I could have stayed longer?

Some of it may just be novelty of doing ministry in a new place with a new group of people. Maybe the novelty w...

While he was saying this, a synagogue leader came and knelt before him and said, 'My daughter has just died. But come and put your hand on her, and she will live.' Jesus got up and went with him, and so did his disciples. Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak. She said to herself, 'If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.' Jesus turned and saw her. 'Take heart, daughter,' he said, 'your faith has healed you.' And the woman was healed at that moment. When Jesus entered the synagogue leader's house and saw the noisy crowd and people playing pipes, he said, 'Go away. The girl is not dead but asleep.' But they laughed at him. After the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took the girl by the hand, and she got up. News of this spread through all that region. NI...

On and Off

The light on the clock indicating the alarm was set kept going off.  The switch was not working; on and off it went.  That switch is such a frustration to me.  I want it to stay on.  I need the light to remind me I already set the alarm.  The alarm wakes me up before it’s too late.   We all need reminders to be ready.  We don’t want to be too early or too late.

As Believers in the LORD Jesus, we too have a responsibility to issue the wake up call to a world that has turned its back on God.  We must remind people to turn to the LORD so they will be saved from God’s wrath and judgment, culminating in eternal judgment.  There is conflict throughout our world.  Turmoil is found all around us.  Judgment seems imminent.  People are concerned.  Where are the Believers who hold the truth of God’s Word to offer assurance and comfort?

Our light goes on and off.  One minute we’re all fired up ready to offer a testimony of what God has done in our life.  In the next minute ...

This Isn’t Kansas Anymore: Life at a Slovakian Summer Camp

My wife and I lived in Scotland for a couple of years. And, in many ways, making the transition to Scotland was much easier than moving to a place like Papua New Guinea. The language and culture of Scotland are similar enough to America that we could navigate through society fairly easily.

One thing we noticed, though, is that when two cultures are rather similar, it really makes the differences stand out. You have a nice breakfast with bacon, eggs, and toast, all things that any American would be quick comfortable eating, and then they hit you with some smoked haddock, which will stay with you all day long…and then some. You get the hang of driving on the other side of the road, and then you run across a road sign you’ve never seen before. (It took me a long time to figure out what the “no parking” sign was trying to tell me.)

When something seems mostly familiar, the differences really stand out.

Daily Manna from the Net for Thursday, July 19, 2012 [Matthew 7:7-11]

'Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. 'Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! NIV Listen ...

The Lord's Gifts and Callings are Irrevocable!

by George Whitten, Editor of Worthy Devotions

Jonah 1:2-3 "Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before Me." But Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.

Romans 11:29 …for the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.

Jonah the prophet ran from what he considered a difficult and abhorrent assignment from God, thinking he could escape to a place where he couldn't be found. He refused to obey the Lord and he boarded a ship headed in the opposite direction. But YHVH's irrevocable gifts and callings were faithfully resting upon His servant Jonah, and He provided the drama needed to bring his man around. He sent a great stor...

Jul 17, Christian Object Lesson - The Proof is in the Pudding!

There is an old saying, "the proof is in the pudding." Actually the original saying said: ""the proof of the
pudding is in the eating" meaning that the quality or true value of something can only be judged when it has been
put to use. In the same way, the proof or truth of God's Word in which we believe will be revealed as we actively put it to use in our lives.

In summary, we can know that what we believe is true because of the One in whom we have trusted. The truth of what we believe will be revealed in the results of us taking the steps to put His Word into use in our lives..."the proof of the pudding is in the eating!"

Find out how to teach this truth through a simple Bible Object Lesson using an old recipe or a box of instant pudding!

Jonah 3:4 And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.

When the prophet Jonah entered Nineveh, he gave a message of hopelessness – in 40 days your city will be destroyed! He did not say, Nineveh will be destroyed "unless", but emphatically prophesied destruction to the people of the city — seeming to say their situation was hopeless. Yet hearing this message Nineveh repented, and because their repentance was genuine God spared the city for a season and many lives were saved. Jonah's prophecy of judgment was averted, and Nineveh's destiny was changed by their response to the deep conviction from a message of doom. That's how it is with God. He is so compassionate, so longing to forgive and restore people to Himself, that He...

To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable: 'Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people--robbers, evildoers, adulterers--or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.' 'But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.' 'I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.' NIV Listen ...

Good Image or Bad Image!

The wicked queen of Sleeping Beauty fame, spoke into her mirror and expected to be pleased with the response.

Ever been to a fairground and looked into the distorted mirrors? Some make you appear squat and wide. Some give you the appearance of being many feet taller than you really are – long and lanky. Still others cause you to almost vanish as your image comes back as a tiny speck, while in another you appear split in two………..amazing!

Mmmm…..Much like our characters, I am thinking. Do we reflect a good image or not? We can appear to others as good and wholesome, while inside we are not. We can present ourselves as unpleasant and gruff, while inside we are not. We can be so quiet as to be insignificant to onlookers, as we speak and are not heard. Do the opinions of others concern you? They matter to me less and less as I become older.

What is more important, is how I appear to God! Am I pleasing Him with my actions and words? Do I care for myself enough ...

The Image of God: 6 Things We Can All Agree On

When you’re arguing with someone, it’s often good to stop and talk about what you actually agree on. That accomplishes two things. First, it will probably get you to stop yelling at each other long enough to have a productive conversation. Second, it will clarify what the argument is really about. You may find that the areas of agreement dwarf the areas of disagreement so much that the argument isn’t worth continuing. Or you’ll reaffirm how important the discussion is, but have a better understanding of why.

Of course, you might also just start arguing about what things you do and don’t agree on.

We’ve been exploring what it means to say that human persons are made “in the image of God.” And this is definitely something people have been arguing about for a very long time. So, before continuing, I’d like to suggest that there are six areas on which there is general agreement.

Are you insured?

by George Whitten, Editor of Worthy Devotions

Psalms 118:8 It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.

When we first arrived in Israel about eight years ago, my wife was almost eight months pregnant. We wanted to have everything concerning the birth worked out ahead of time because we knew we'd have so many other things to think about once we got here. So we made certain to pay for our Israeli health insurance coverage even before we arrived, just to be sure we would have no problems. But something inconceivable happened — the Israeli government went on strike before our payment information was entered into their records. When we tried to get prenatal care and sign up at the hospital, they had no record of our payment and thus, no way to help us (unless, of course, we were willing to pay an obscene amount of money, money we didn't have). Little did we know that th...

The Mourner Comforted

The Mourner Comforted

Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. (Matthew 5:4)

By the valley of weeping we come to Zion. One would have thought mourning and being blessed were in opposition, but the infinitely wise Savior puts them together in this Beatitude. What He has joined together let no man put asunder. Mourning for sin--our own sins, and the sins of others--is the Lord's seal set upon His faithful ones. When the Spirit of grace is poured upon the house of David, or any other house, they shall mourn. By holy mourning we receive the best of our blessings, even as the rarest commodities come to us by water. Not only shall the mourner be blessed at some future day, but Christ pronounces him blessed even now.

The Holy Spirit will surely comfort those hearts which mourn for sin. They shall be comforted by the application of the blood of Jesus and by the cleansing power of the Holy Ghost. They shall be comforted as to the abounding sin of their city and o...

Complete Deliverance

Complete Deliverance

But I will deliver thee in that day, saith the Lord; and thou shalt not be given into the hand of the men of whom thou art afraid. (Jeremiah 39:17)

When the Lord's faithful ones are suffering for Him, they shall have sweet messages of love from Himself, and sometimes they shall have glad tidings for those who sympathize with them and help them. Ebed-melech was only a despised Ethiopian, but he was kind to Jeremiah, and so the Lord sent him this special promise by the mouth of His prophet. Let us be ever mindful of God's persecuted servants, and He will reward us.

Ebed-melech was to be delivered from the men whose vengeance he feared. He was a humble... man, but Jehovah would take care of him. Thousands were slain by the Chaldeans, but could not be hurt. We, too, may be fearful of some great ones who are bitter against us; but if we have been faithful to the Lord's cause in the hour of persecution, He will be faithful to us. After all, what can a ma...

When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, 'Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?' His Love; His Gift; His Son

His Love; His Gift; His Son

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (John 3:16)

Of all the stars in the sky, the polestar is the most useful to the mariner. This text is a polestar, for it has guided more souls to salvation than any other Scripture. It is among promises what the Great Bear is among constellations.

Several words in it shine with peculiar brilliance. Here we have God's love with a "so" to it, which marks its measureless greatness. Then we have God's gift in all its freeness and greatness. This also is God's Son, that unique and priceless gift of a love which could never fully show itself till heaven's Only-begotten had been sent to live and die for men. These three points are full of light.

Then there is the simple requirement of believing, which graciously points to a way of salvation suitable for guilty men. This is backed by a wide description--"wh...

Never Separated from God

Never Separated from God

And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believeth thou this? (John 11:26)

Yes, Lord, we believe it; we shall never die. Our soul may be separated from our body, and this is death of a kind; but our soul shall never be separated from God, which is the true death--the death which was threatened to sin--the death penalty which is the worst that can happen. We believe this most assuredly, for who shall separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord? We are members of the Body of Christ; will Christ lose parts of His Body? We are married to Jesus; will He be bereaved and widowed? It is not possible. There is a life within us which is not capable of being divided from God: yea, and the Holy Spirit dwells within us, and how then can we die? Jesus, Himself, is our life, and therefore there is no dying for us, for He cannot die again, In Him we died unto sin once, and the capital sentence cannot a second time be executed....

Whom, When, How to Deliver

Whom, When, How to Deliver

The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished. (2 Peter 2:9)

The godly are tempted and tried. That is not true faith which is never put to the test. But the godly are delivered out of their trials, and that not by chance, nor by secondary agencies, but by the Lord Himself. He personally undertakes the office of delivering those who trust Him. God loves the godly or godlike, and He makes a point of knowing where they are and how they fare.

Sometimes their way seems to be a labyrinth, and they cannot imagine how they are to escape from threatening danger. What they do not know, their Lord knows. He knows whom to deliver, and when to deliver, and how to deliver. He delivers in the way which is most beneficial to the godly, most crushing to the tempter, and most glorifying to Himself. We may leave the "how" with the Lord and be content to rejoice in the fact that He ...

Implicit Trust

Implicit Trust

For I will surely deliver thee, and thou shalt not fall by the sword, but thy life shall be for a prey unto thee: because thou hast put thy trust in me, saith the Lord. (Jeremiah 39:18)

Behold the protecting power of trust in God. The great men of Jerusalem fell by the sword, but poor Ebed-melech was secure, for his confidence was in Jehovah. Where else should a man trust but in his Maker? We are foolish when we prefer the creature to the Creator. Oh, that we could in all things live by faith, then should we be delivered in all time of danger! No one ever did trust in the Lord in vain, and no one ever shall.

The Lord saith, "I will surely deliver thee," Mark the divine "surely." Whatever else may be uncertain, God's care of believers is sure. God Himself is the guardian of the gracious, Under His sacred wing there is safety even when every danger is abroad. Can we accept this promise as sure? Then in our present emergency we shall find that it stands fast...

Burdens Cast on Him

Burdens Cast on Him

Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee; he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved. (Psalm 55:22)

It is a heavy burden; roll it on Omnipotence. It is thy burden now, and it crushes thee; but when the Lord takes it, He will make nothing of it. If thou art called still to bear, "he will sustain thee." It will be on Him and not on thee. Thou wilt be so upheld under it that the burden will be a blessing. Bring the Lord into the matter, and thou wilt stand upright under that which in itself would bow thee down.

Our worst fear is lest our trial should drive us from the path of duty; but this the Lord will never suffer. If we are righteous before Him, He will not endure that our affliction should move us from our standing. In Jesus He accepts us as righteous, and in Jesus He will keep us so.

What about the present moment? Art thou going forth to this day's trial alone? Are thy poor shoulders again to be galled with the oppressive ...

Have We Lost God’s Hedge of Protection?

“And now, please let me tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I will take away its hedge, and it shall be burned; and break down its wall, and it shall be trampled down. (Isaiah 5:5)

One of my favorite pastors once told me, “The Holy Spirit is a gentleman. He does not go where he is not wanted.” I wonder if this statement could be applied to what’s happening in our country today.

There is no doubt that God placed a hedge of protection around this country for many years, but I think it’s gone now. We have pushed him out of our schools, our county courthouses, and in some case, out of our churches. I fear what its loss may have in store for us, and what those of us who truly love him and very want his protection can do about it.

Isaiah was not the only prophet to whom God spoke about losing his hedge of protection. Asaph who put music to many of David’s psalms wrote about it in Psalm 80 when Israel lost God’s hedge of protecti...

Daily Manna from the Net for Saturday, July 14, 2012 [Matthew 9:1-8]

Jesus stepped into a boat, crossed over and came to his own town. Some men brought to him a paralyzed man, lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the man, 'Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven.' At this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves, 'This fellow is blaspheming!' Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said, 'Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts? Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, ‘Get up and walk'? But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.' So he said to the paralyzed man, 'Get up, take your mat and go home.' Then the man got up and went home. When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to man. NIV Listen ...

Limps and Blessings

…and he was limping because of the injury to his hip. Genesis 32:31

I am a crooked woman. I have missing ribs, two partially missing lungs and an altered shoulder. All have an affect on my entire body. Radical cancer surgery has thrown me askew. I learned this was obvious when asked, “Why are you limping?”

I don’t necessarily want to struggle with one-sided weakness for my lifetime but I’m reminded of Jacob, the struggler-turned-patriarch. At birth, he grabbed his twin’s heel, later took his bi...

Be a good citizen!

by George Whitten, Editor of Worthy Devotions

Phillipians 3:20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,

When we think of a good citizen, we probably think of a law-abiding, productive contributor to society who takes pride in his country. I'm sure all of us would like to be thought of as good citizens of the countries in which we live. My wife has dual citizenship, she's both Israeli and American — I guess that means she has to work extra hard at being loyal!

We, as believers in Yeshua (Jesus), have to remember that we also have dual citizenship. We must become good citizens of both Heaven and Earth. How do we do this? We love God with all our heart, mind and soul and love our neighbor as ourselves. We become productive contributors in our local assemblies and/or in our local communities, and we continually give ou...

Doing Missions with Kids

We’re almost at the end of our first week in Slovakia. The jet lag is entirely gone, the temperature has cooled enough for us to sleep with the windows closed, blocking out the street noise below, and were still having a great time.

This is the first time my wife and I have been to Slovakia–indeed, anywhere in Eastern Europe. So we’re having plenty of new experiences. But what really makes this trip unique is that we’re here as a family.

Here’s what we’ve learned so far.

Big Mouth

Life is full of its little secrets, isn’t it? For instance, the government gives us permission to drive only after we have passed a test and received a license. Owning our own vehicle means registration numbers, insurance information and vehicle plates. We don’t share this sort of stuff because it is part of our private identification. It could be disastrous if others found it out and used it illegally.

Judges 16:15-Then she said to him, “How can you say, ‘I love you,’ when you won’t confide in me? This is the third time you have made a fool of me and haven’t told me the secret of your great strength.”(NIV)

5 Reasons the “Image of God” Is Ambiguous

If you asked me to describe my wife, the first words out of my mouth are fairly important – and dangerous. If my wife is standing nearby and the first thing I say is “Well, she doesn’t mop the floors much,” I guarantee that I’ll be sleeping on those very same floors later that night. It’s not that this isn’t true (mopping the floors is actually my job), but what you say first says a lot about what you think of the person that you’re trying to describe. What you say first matters.

The first thing that the Bible says about human persons is that we are made “in the image of God.” So it would seem reasonable to conclude that this is a fairly important statement.

But why is it so confusing?

People have argued for centuries about what it means to be made “in the image of God.” If it’s so important, why has there been so much disagreement? I’d like to suggest five reasons.

Don't Run!

by George Whitten, Editor of Worthy Devotions

Jeremiah 42:10-18 If ye will still abide in this land, then will I build you, and not pull you down, and I will plant you, and not pluck you up: …(13) But if ye say, We will not dwell in this land, neither obey the voice of the LORD your God, (14) Saying, No; but we will go into the land of Egypt, where we shall see no war, nor hear the sound of the trumpet, nor have hunger of bread; and there will we dwell … (16) Then it shall come to pass, that the sword, which ye feared, shall overtake you there in the land of Egypt, and the famine, whereof ye were afraid, shall follow close after you there in Egypt; and there ye shall die.

Perhaps this scripture just hit me harder when I read it, living here in Israel under the circumstances but I believe there is a word for all of us here.

God has called each of us to something specific and He ...

Daily Manna from the Net for Thursday, July 12, 2012 [Luke 8:43-48]

And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years, but no one could heal her. She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped. 'Who touched me?' Jesus asked. When they all denied it, Peter said, 'Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you.' But Jesus said, 'Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me.' Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. Then he said to her, 'Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.' NIV Listen ...
