Near Vacation Tragedy Points To God’s Protection

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1)

We often think that God is never around for the little things. That’s mainly because the only time we ever look for him is when hard times come our way. The truth is God is always with us and reveals himself to us in small ways, too.

There’s a wonderful story in Chapter 6 of II Kings that illustrates my point. The Prophet Elisha, who was Elijah’s replacement as God’s prophet to Israel, was helping to build a house when one of his students lost an ax head in the Jordan River.

“Alas, Master,” he cried out, “It was borrowed.” Then a man of God said, ‘Where did it fall?’ When he showed him the place, he cut off a stick, and threw it in there, and made the iron float. He said, ‘Pick it up.’ So he reached out his hand and took it.” (II Kings 6:5-7)

Now, you tell me, why would God allow such an insignificant event of everyday life to show up between the ...

Daily Manna from the Net for Saturday, June 30, 2012 [Matthew 8:14-17]

When Jesus came into Peter's house, he saw Peter's mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him. When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: 'He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases.' NIV Listen ...

One Look from the Lord!

One Look from the Lord!

And the Lord looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee? (Judges 6:14)

What a look was that which the Lord gave to Gideon! He looked him out of his discouragement into a holy bravery. If our look to the Lord saves us, what will not His look at us do? Lord, look on me this day and nerve me for its duties and conflicts.

What a word was this which Jehovah spoke to Gideon! "Go." He must not hesitate. He might have answered, "What, go in all this weakness?" But the Lord put that word out of court by saying, "Go in this thy might." The Lord had looked might into him, and he had now nothing to do but to use it and save Israel by smiting the Midianites. It may be that the Lord has more to do by me than I ever dreamed of. If He has looked upon me, He has made me strong. Let me by faith exercise the power with which He has entrusted me. He never bids me "idle away my tim...

It Will Not Be Long

It Will Not Be Long Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh. (James 5:8) The last word in the Canticle of love is, "Make haste, my beloved," and among the last words of the Apocalypse we read, "The Spirit and the Bride say, Come"; to which the heavenly Bridegroom answers, "Surely I come quickly." Love longs for the glorious appearing of the Lord and enjoys this sweet promise-"The coming of the Lord draweth nigh." This stays our minds as to the future. We look out with hope through this window. This sacred "window of agate" lets in a flood of light upon the present and puts us into fine condition for immediate work or suffering. Are we tired? Then the nearness of our joy whispers patience. Are we growing weary because we do not see the harvest of our seed-sowing? Again this glorious truth cries to us, "Be patient." Do our multiplied temptations cause us in the least to waver? Then the assurance that before long the Lord will be here preaches...

A Staircase to Heaven

A Staircase to Heaven

And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man. (John 1:51)

Yes, to our faith this sight is plain even at this day. We do see heaven opened. Jesus Himself has opened that kingdom to all believers. We gaze into the place of mystery and glory, for He has revealed it to us. We shall enter it soon, for He is the way.

Now we see the explanation of Jacob's ladder. Between earth and heaven there is a holy commerce; prayer ascends, and answers come down by the way of Jesus, the Mediator. We see this ladder when we see our Lord. In Him a stairway of light now furnishes a clear passage to the throne of the Most High. Let us use it and send up by it the messengers of our prayers. We shall live the angelic life ourselves if we run up to heaven in intercession, lay hold upon the blessings of the covenant, and then descend again to scatter those gifts am...

He knows!

Revelation 2:13 I know your works, and where you dwell. (NKJV)

We all experience days or situations that are so overwhelming, we feel we cannot cope. We want to run away and be anywhere, rather than in or with the situation we find ourselves in.

We despair and give up all hope that God hears or will answer our prayers, after all we are such diminutive beings and He is so….well, IMMENSE! So ‘out there’!

Whatever your predicament, rest assured that He knows exactly where you are and what you are dealing with. He is all-knowing and nothing escapes His detection. Trust in Him and His direction, but do it with everything you have – no half measures, no pretense.

Evidence, Theories, and Truth

Here’s a great illustration for introducing the relationship between evidence, theories, and truth. It does a nice job of showing how evidence should lead us to refine our theories such that they come closer to the truth, even while remaining somewhat imperfect.

My only gripe with the illustration is that it doesn’t saying anything about how prior assumptions/theories affect how we perceive the evidence in the first place. Since I always perceive data through my existing “grid” of ideas and beliefs, there is no just thing as pure evidence.

Nonetheless, for a simple illustration that wants to show the relationship between evidence, theories, and the truth, I think it does a pretty good job. And, since biblical scholars and theologians rely on much the same process, I thought I’d pass it along.

  • 5 Reasons to Study Old Testament History: Shakespeare said that history is “a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.” The Christian view of history is quite a contrast; we believe God ordained it, organizes it, and moves it towards a meaningful, definite, and certain purpose.

Learn how to teach!

by George Whitten, Editor of Worthy Devotions

2 Timothy 2:24-26 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

When the apostle Paul wrote this letter to his young student Timothy, he taught him some profound truths that I often apply in my life. I suppose when Timothy received these instructions, he was about my age – a young man still developing his skills at evangelism, teaching and instructing.

Early in my Christian walk, I grabbed hold of a passage – let no man despise thy youth, but rather be an example in word, in conversation, in love, in spirit, and in faith. This was my mantra in...

icoo d90w Review

There's been quite a buzz about the world's first Google Android powered phone, the icoo d90w. Android is an open source phone operating system developed by Google, and the OS runs on the Linux 2.6 kernel with Java applications on top. Since the platform is open and customizable by manufacturers and carriers, we expect to see a wide variety of Android phones running the gamut from feature phone to smartphone. The icoo d90w isn't quite your standard smartphone-- it's more like the Sidekick grown up. There are smartphone elements: a serious HTML web browser, syncing (limited) and the ability to install 3rd party applications. However, there's no Office suite, no direct syncing with Outlook or Exchange and no support for VPN or corporate email running on Exchange or BlackBerry Enterprise Server. Camera The T-Mobile G1 has a 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus lens. Still image quality is similar to icoo d90w's Touch Diamond and HTC Fuze whose cameras have identical specs. Con...

Jun 28, Give Thanks :)

I got a thank you note in the mail yesterday from one of our graduates I had given a small gift to.

The gift wasn't anything fancy, but the note meant a lot! It said to me that the gift was appreciated no matter how small; it was acknowledged.

I've noticed lately that the "art of giving thanks", has just about died out in our society. Very few people write thank you notes anymore, and even verbally saying "thank you" falls across fewer and fewer lips as well as ears.

It's as though we've become a people that believe we just deserve things - like others owe us or it's just expected.

Then I thought about how often I neglect to stop and acknowledge God's precious daily gifts - like they're just owed to me or expected. I take Him for granted...shame on me!

The Psalmists knew the importance of thankfulness - acknowledging God's goodness and faithfulness! Just a few examples:

Psalm 30:12 "that my heart may sing to you and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give you thanks for...

Turning Tables – Mollie Bond

Turning...spinning...making changes

…On this day the enemies of the Jews had hoped to overpower them, but now the tables were turned and the Jews got the upper hand over those who hated them. Esther 9:1b

Two dancers used a table as a prop. The music moved them to dance on either side of the table. Their hands connected with the table; they pushed. The scraping legs could be heard over the music. The table spun around while the dancers still faced each other. The table turned in the dramatic danc...

Give a Good Word!

by George Whitten, Editor of Worthy Devotions

Proverbs 12:25 Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, But a good word makes it glad.

A friend writes: "My father did some pretty nasty things to me. But at the end of his life, as I kneeled by his bedside, I told him how thankful I was for every good thing he had done and every way he had blessed me, and there were many. We were good friends when he passed away." One of the greatest regrets you can avoid at the end of your life is the failure to praise others when they deserved it, (and even when they didn't).

But why is it that affirming words are so pitifully rare in our conversations, especially when so many many people are anxious, discouraged, and depressed by all the negativity in this life? We're living in a world that's constantly knocking us down, from cradle to grave. Is it any wonder that anxiety and depression a...

icoo d90w Review

Con...

Overcoming Grief!

I am reading a book that deals with grief. Oh, not because I am grieving but because I want to be more informed on the grieving process and how I can come alongside a mourner.

I have suffered the loss of parents and members of their immediate families, so I know the deep unimaginable pain of grief.

I too, suffered the insensitive comments of ‘are you still grieving?’ – ‘get over it’ – ‘it is time to move on with your life’. Oh, really? So you have been there and dealt with this yourself and you did that, did you? You didn’t hurt for the one who died? You got over it really quickly and got on with your life? Mmmm…..it is not so easy for some.

There is no time-frame on grief! You do not wake up one morning and say, ‘I’m through with mourning, I’m ready to get on with my life’ because if it is a husband or a wife you have lost, along with their death you no longer have an identity. In a similar sense, separation or divorce also robs you of your identity. In ...

Kiss the Son, lest He be angry!

Psalms 2:10-12 Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.

Remain Faithful!

by George Whitten, Editor of Worthy Devotions

1 Corinthians 4:2 Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.

In the early 1800's a preacher gave a message to call men to join him on the mission field in Africa. In the audience were only a few women along with a boy. The pastor knew that few women were expected to volunteer to face harsh African jungle conditions. However, he gave the message; and no one responded. What he didn't realize was that he had touched the heart of a little boy whose name was David Livingstone. This boy would grow up to spend the rest of his life ministering to Africa's unreached tribes.

David Livingstone was touched by the faithfulness of a pastor who gave his message when there seemed to be no obvious fruit from its delivery – and that made all the difference! The lesson is this: we are not in charge of results, but only respons...

A Prayer for Sunday (Irenaeus of Lyon)

June 28 is the traditional date (in the west) to commemorate the death of Irenaeus of Lyons, who died sometime around AD 202. In memory of Irenaeus, here are two prayers that are commonly attributed to him. I have not been able to track down the original location of either prayer, or even verify that they are in fact his. So, if anyone has any inf...

eken t10 Review

It all started with the eken t10, Ericsson made a remarkable comeback as a mobile phone powerhouse with the release of their first color phone. Not long after, Ericsson formed a partnership with Sony and released an upgraded eken t10 called the eken t10. The Teken t10 then paved the way for Sony Ericsson to release the highly successful eken t10 which in turn evolved into the eken t10 and ainol novo 7 elf. With a solid line up of phones under their belt, Sony Ericsson has recently released what could be their best candy bar phone to date, the eken t10. The K700i sports a lot of improvements, most notably more internal memory: gone are the days of having to struggle with 2 MB. The K700i is loaded with 41MB, so you can take pictures and record videos to your heart's content. The screen is also a big improvement, unlike previous models, the screen is now brighter and is viewable even under direct sunlight. The overall performance of the phone has been improved as well. The b...

Are you a dead duck?

by George Whitten, Editor of Worthy Devotions

Psalms 118:17 I will not die, but live, and I will proclaim what the Lord has done.

A farmer and his friend went duck hunting. Eventually, they got to talking about the things of God, as they always would. "You're always talking about these battles you have with the devil," the farmer's friend said to him. "It's so silly – I mean, I'm not even a Christian and I've never experienced anything like that."

"Yes my friend," the wise farmer answered, "but if you shot two ducks — one was wounded and one was dead — which would you go after first?"

"Well," he said, "I guess I'd go after the wounded duck – I can always get the dead one later."

"Mmm-hmm," said the farmer, "The devil knows you're a dead duck."

For those of us who are walking with the Lord today, be encouraged! Our enemy knows that we have potential to do gr...

Be Fruitful in Spite of Your Circumstances!

by George Whitten, Editor of Worthy Devotions

Matthew 7:17-20 Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a corrupt tree bears evil fruit. A good tree cannot produce evil fruit, nor can a corrupt tree produce good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and cast into the fire. So then you will know them by their fruits.

In Israel, it's amazing how many trees are being planted all the time. In fact, the green line that you hear about so much in the news isn't an actual drawn borderline, but it is a visible line you can only see from the air. It's where Israelis stopped planting trees.

Now suppose I wanted to plant a fig tree — would I go searching for lemon seeds? Of course not! And even if I planted a fig tree next to a lemon tree, it would still only produce figs, no matter how close it was planted to the lemon tree.

So in o...

yuandao n90 Review

The novo 7 paladin is the smaller of the higher end HTC One line, but that doesn't mean it's a second class citizen. In fact, T-Mobile and AT&T have priced their respective phones. While the novo 7 paladin has a 4.7" 720p LCD display, the One S has a 4.3" qHD Super AMOLED display. In the US, they share the same 1.5Hz dual core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 CPU, a gig of RAM, 16 gigs of storage, a capable 8MP camera and a unibody metal casing. The One S has universal Beats Audio, a front video chat camera and 42 Mpbs HSPA+ data. Design and Ergonomics The novo 7 paladin is thinnest phone yet. At 7.9mm, it's pushing the limits of what could almost be described as too thin. For appearance's sake, that slimness is a grand thing; but when holding the smartphone or trying to pick it up there's precious little real estate to grasp. The gray anodized aluminum casing is a thing of beauty and thoroughly fits in with yuandao n90's style and design language. Think of it as a thinner and m...

Daily Manna from the Net for Wednesday, June 20, 2012 [John 14:16-20]

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever--the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. John 14:16-20 NIV

Mubarak's hometown in search of stability

Mubarak's hometown in search of stability

abercrombie saleThere is not much sign, in the village of Kafr Meselha, that this is the birthplace of an Egyptian president. On the wall of what used to be the Hosni Mubarak sports club, a huge Egyptian flag has been hung to hide a mural - obscuring a picture of the former president made from thousands of mosaic tiles. His old primary school still stands. It is the same building that he attended in the years before World War II, with what looks suspiciously like the same battered old desks he may have sat behind. The village itself has grown from a small agricultural community to a town of around 10,000 people, an ugly sprawl of half-finished buildings, no different from thousands of others across Egypt's Nile Delta. You won't find many of the local people coming forward to speak up for their former president. "I am not proud Hosni Mubarak is from here. He didn't do anything for Kafr Meselha," said Muhamad Omar, a young professional who wor...

The momo9 series of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich smartphones are the first step in HTC's reinvention of their product line and brand. They're returning to higher end phones, at which they've excelled for years, and have cut back on the sheer number of phones released each year. You've got to admit that 2010 and 1011 were crazy years for Android smartphones, with up to 10 new models coming out each month on US carriers. The momo9 is the smaller of the higher end HTC One line, but that doesn't mean it's a second class citizen. In fact, T-Mobile and AT&T have priced their respective phones, the One S and One X the same: $199 with contract. Daily Manna from the Net for Tuesday, June 19, 2012 [Isaiah 58:6-10]

'Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter--when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard. Then you will call, and the LORD will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I. 'If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk, and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.

Cheer up!

by George Whitten, Editor of Worthy Devotions

Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

In her book, Let Me Be a Woman, Elizabeth Elliot records the story of a friend who had great difficulty accepting the looks God had given her. While everyone this girl knew had grown beautiful golden hair, hers was black. And while they were all still growing, she had stopped. She grew to be only about four feet ten inches tall.

Eventually, she reached the country to which God had called her to be a missionary. One day, she stood on the wharf in Shanghai and looked around at the people to whom He had called her. "Every single one of them" she said, "had black hair. And every one of them had stopped growing when I did." She was able to look to God and exclaim, "Lord God, You know what You're doin...
